Jewelry Cleaning 101

When you purchase a stunning piece of jewelry that you just LOVE, you want to ensure that it always looks as nice as the day you brought it home, right?  Right!  In this post we are going to discuss the best home remedies to make sure your jewelry Shynes!

Let’s begin with an easy way to prevent your jewelry from quickly dulling in the first place!  It is best to avoid wearing any precious jewelry while doing activities such as: showering, exercising, cooking, cleaning, or any other similar tasks.  Even when taking these preventative measures, though,  everyday life will still take its toll so let’s get to cleaning!

To clean gold, you will want to create a mixture of detergent free soap and warm water.  Use a soft bristled toothbrush to gently scrub your gold with this mixture.  Rinse with warm water and gently dry with a lint free cloth.  If your gold jewelry contains any precious stones such as pearl, opal, emerald, turquoise, amber, coral or onyx, avoid scrubbing them with your mixture and also try to avoid immersing them in your warm water rinse.  You can gently wipe these stones with your lint free cloth at the end of the cleaning! This remains true for any pieces that include precious stones.

To clean sterling silver, create a mixture of 1/4 cup of warm water and 2 tbsp of baking soda.  You can either immerse your silver in this mixture or gently scrub it with a soft bristled toothbrush.  Rinse with warm water and dry with a lint free cloth.  The same steps apply as above if there are any precious stones in your jewelry.  If you are using a store bought “jewelry cleaner” to clean your silver, make sure it is meant for sterling silver to avoid scratching your jewelry.

To clean diamonds, lightly spray windex directly onto a soft bristled toothbrush.  Gently scrub your diamonds with the toothbrush, making sure to get all the crevices.  Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a lint free cloth or air dry with a blow drier on a low setting.

To clean pearls, dampen a lint free cloth with warm water and gently wipe pearls.  When storing your pearl jewelry, it is best to keep them separate to avoid scratching your pearls!

Now, you are ready to make sure your jewelry always looks as good as new!  But remember, any jewelry that you purchase from Shyne Jewelers can be brought or sent in for a polish at no charge!
