Last month it was discovered that a fisherman from the Philippines had found the world’s largest natural pearl, weighing in at around 75 pounds! And thats not even the craziest part. The fisherman had been keeping the pearl under his bed for 10 years!
It was a relative of the fisherman who convinced him to share his amazing discovery with the world. Pictured below (from npr.com) is the pearl, said to be about 2 feet long and 1 foot wide.

The world’s reigning champion for largest pearl, until now, was the “Pearl of Lao Tzu”. It was discovered in 2003 and weighs in at 14 pounds.
So how big is a 75 pound pearl in the jewelry world, really? Well, it would work out to be somewhere around 170,000 carats.
